Why is USA obsessed with overthrowing Venezuela? Is it oil, China, Russia, socialism, multipolarity?

Why has the US constantly tried to overthrow Venezuela's leftist government, backing coup attempts against Presidents Hugo Chávez and Nicolás Maduro? Ben Norton analyzes the role of Venezuela's large oil reserves and natural resources; socialist system; anti-imperialist foreign policy; partnership with China, Russia, and Iran; and key role in building a multipolar world.

Brazil’s Lula calls for end to dollar trade dominance

  • During his first trip to China, Brazil’s president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has called on developing countries to work towards replacing the US dollar with their own currencies in international trade, lending his voice to Beijing’s efforts to end the greenback’s dominance of global commerce.

  • “Every night I ask myself why all countries have to base their trade on the dollar,” Lula said in an impassioned speech at the New Development Bank in Shanghai, known as the “Brics bank”.

  • “Why can’t we do trade based on our own currencies?” he added, drawing loud applause from the audience of Brazilian and Chinese dignitaries. “Who was it that decided that the dollar was the currency after the disappearance of the gold standard?”

Biden unveils new Latin America economic plan at reboot summit dogged by dissent

President Joe Biden announced on Wednesday a proposed new U.S. economic partnership with Latin America aimed at countering China's growing clout as he kicked off a regional summit marred by discord and snubs over the guest list.

Hosting the Summit of the Americas in Los Angeles, Biden sought to assure the assembled leaders about his administration's commitment to the region despite nagging concerns that Washington, at times, is still trying to dictate to its poorer southern neighbors.

Snubs from key leaders at Summit of the Americas reveal Biden's struggle to assert US leadership in its neighborhood

The decision by Mexico's President to boycott this week's summit for regional leaders in Los Angeles rendered futile months of work by President Joe Biden and other top officials to convince him to attend.

Now, key nations in Central America are following President Andrés Manuel López Obrador's lead, dispatching only lower-level delegates instead of their leaders.

In the end, the White House announced Tuesday that 23 heads of state will attend this week's Summit of the Americas, with the absences of the presidents of Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala being notable since the United States has worked to cultivate those leaders as partners on immigration, an issue that looms as a political liability for Biden.

Nicaragua withdraws from "diabolical" and colonial OAS, saying it is an "instrument" of U.S. "imperialism"

Nicaragua announced it has closed the offices of the Organization of American States and expelled its staff from within its borders, accusing the 35-member bloc of being an instrument of U.S. meddling.

"Nicaragua is not a colony of anyone, therefore it is not part of a ministry of colonies," the government said in a statement, referring to the OAS as a "diabolical instrument."

"By confirming our irrevocable denunciation and resignation, in the face of this calamitous, truculent and lying dependency of the State Department of Yankee imperialism, we also communicate that as of this date we cease to be part of all the deceitful mechanisms of this monstrosity," it said.
